AES Indiana, a subsidiary of the US’ AES Corporation, has announced a US$1.1bn investment over the 2024-2026 period for the coal-to-gas conversion on two units of the Petersburg Generating Station and the construction of two new renewable projects in Pike County (Indiana, US).
The renewable projects include the Petersburg Energy Center, which is expected to add 250 MW in solar capacity and 180 MWh of battery storage to AES Indiana portfolio. The energy center is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2025. AES Indiana will also invest in the 200 MW/800 MWh Pike County Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The repowering of the of Petersburg Generating Station Units 3 and 4 from coal to natural gas is pending regulatory approval by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC).
The investments align with AES Indiana’s 2022 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which aims to transition coal-powered units to natural gas and adding wind, solar and battery storage capacity over the next five years.
