The US power company AES Corporation has ended operations at the 1.3 GW Redondo Beach gas-fired power plant located in the US State of California. The Redondo Beach power plant, owned by AES Southland Energy, had four gas-fired units and sold its power to Southern California Edison.
The state of California initially planned to close the Redondo Beach and other similar ocean-cooled plants at the end of 2020. However, the California State Water Resources Control Board later approved operating extensions until the end of 2023 for plants along the coast (Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Oxnard and Redondo Beach) after the state experienced rolling blackouts due to a series of extreme heat waves. In recent years, Redondo Beach has been operating at less than full capacity as a backup “peaker plant”. In August 2023, the Californian authorities decided not to extend the operation of the Redondo facility, with redevelopment plans to start sometime in 2024.
In February 2023 the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) announced the country’s intention to retire 15.6 GW of installed capacity in 2023, mostly coal (8.9 GW) and gas (6.2 GW). At the end of 2022, the United States had a total installed capacity of 1,187 GW, of which gas constitutes 42%.
