AES Andes submits 3.7 GW in solar and BESS projects for approval in Chile

AES Andes, a subsidiary of the US utility AES Corporation, has submitted three solar PV projects, representing a total investment of US$3bn, for environmental evaluation in Chile. The company has submitted to the Environmental Assessment Service of the Chilean regions of Tarapacá and Antofagasta three projects with a combined capacity of 3.7 GW, of which 1.7 GW are solar PV and 2 GW correspond to battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The specific projects are the 581 MW Solar Oriente PV project (worth US$990m), an 809 MW BESS in the Pozo Almonte commune (Tarapaca region), as well as the 764 MW Altos del Sol PV project coupled with a 1,053 MW/5.3 GWh BESS and the 382 MW Llanos del Sol PV project coupled with a 531 MW/2.66 GWh BESS, which were previously submitted in July 2024. If approved, the company expects all of these projects to start construction works by October 2025.

AES Andes aims to have more than 1,6 GW by 2027, to which would be added to the 2 GW that the company expects to submit into environmental review before 2030. The company has already obtained the environmental approval for 140 MW of wind, 252 MW of solar PV and 624 MW of BESS projects.
