AES Andes, the South American subsidiary of the US energy company AES, was awarded five plots of land in the Tarapacá and Antofagasta regions of northern Chile to develop 3 GW of wind, solar and battery projects. The land was awarded to the company by the Chilean Ministry of National Assets following a public tender for the development of new emission-free projects.
In Chile, AES Andes owns and operates 3,865 MW of capacity, including 771 MW of hydro power, 429 MW of solar and 348 MW of wind. The company is notably currently developing a 863 MW wind and solar hybrid project, located in the Antofagasta region and scheduled for 2027.
In 2021, renewables accounted for 46% of Chile’s overall capacity mix, with 15% of solar (4.7 GW) and 10% of wind (3.1 GW).
