AES acquires the 2 GW Bellfield solar plus storage project in California (US)

The US power company AES Corporation has acquired the 2 GW Bellfield solar plus storage project, located in Kern County in the US state of California. The project, which AES acquired from the energy company Avantus (formerly 8minute), is currently the largest permitted solar project with integrated storage in the United States.

The Bellfield project will feature a total of 1 GW of solar and up to 1 GW of energy storage across two 500 MW development phases. They are planned to become operational in 2025 and 2026 respectively. The project is also expected to offset emissions by 2.25 MtCO2/year. The first phase has a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply hourly, clean power to an AES corporate customer. It expects to contract the second phase capacity by the end of 2023.

In May 2023, AES announced plans to triple its renewable installed capacity by 2027. The group expects to add 25 to 30 GW of solar, wind and storage capacity by 2027, and to phase out of coal-fired power generation by the end of 2025.
