Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL), a subsidiary of India’s Adani Group, has reached financial closure for its INR83bn (US$1bn) green high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission project, which will be built in Mumbai, Maharashtra (central India). The 80 km transmission project will allow the injection of 1 GW of renewable power into the city. Construction of the power line is expected to begin in October 2023. Adani Energy Solutions has announced it is committed to increasing the share of renewable energy in the overall energy mix of the city of Mumbai to 60% by 2027 (30% currently). Mumbai’s electricity demand is expected to attain 5 GW by fiscal year 2025, from the current peak demand of 4 GW. The city has only 1.8 GW of embedded generation capacity, which puts a strain on the transmission infrastructure.
