The Indian independent power producer Adani Power has laid the foundation stone on a 3.2 GW coal-fired power plant in Chapar, in the Dhubri district of Assam, India (Adani Power press release, 21/09/2026). The INR480bn (USD5bn) project comprises four 800 MW units. According to the company, the facility is designed to use ultra-supercritical (USC) technology, high-efficiency systems and modern environmental safeguards, with commissioning scheduled in phases from December 2030. The power plant is expected to supply residential, commercial and industrial consumers, while strengthening Assam’s electricity generation capacity.
Adani Power was selected to develop the project through a competitive bidding process in October 2025 and received a letter of award from Assam Power Distribution Company in November 2025. The facility forms part of Adani Group’s power investment in Assam, which also includes two pumped-storage projects totalling 2.7 GW worth INR150bn (USD1.6bn). The company has an installed capacity of 18.3 GW across 13 power plants in India.
As of 2025, India had an installed thermal capacity of 330 GW, representing 56% of its total installed capacity, including 273 GW of coal (47% of the capacity) (Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 data).
