The Saudi power company ACWA Power has started commercial operations of the final unit of the 2.4 GW Hassyan gas-fired power plant, located in the Dubai Emirate (United Arab Emirates). ACWA Power has received the Plant Commercial Operation certificate from the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa), thus allowing the start of operations on the last of the plant’s four 600 MW units.
ACWA Power owns a 26.95% share in Hassyan project, which was converted to run only on natural gas instead of coal in 2022. The project was initially designed and built-for-purpose as a dual-fuel plant with the ability to operate full-time on both natural gas and coal, but now relies only on natural gas as the UAE steps up efforts to reduce emissions and achieve net zero by 2050. The US$3.2bn project aims to avoid about 30 MtCO2 in emissions by 2030.
Gas accounts for more than 80% of the UAE's installed capacity and power generation (2022).
