ACWA Power will develop 1.4 GW of solar and 1.2 GW of storage in Uzbekistan

Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has signed agreements worth US$2.5bn with the Uzbek Ministry of Energy to build two solar power plants totalling 1.4 GW and three power storage systems totalling 1.2 GW in eastern Uzbekistan.

Under the agreements, ACWA Power will build a 400 MW plant and a 400 MW storage facility in the Tashkent province, a 1 GW solar plant and a 400 MW storage system in the Samarkand region, and another 400 MW storage facility in the Bukhara province. Simultaneously to the announcement of the agreements, the construction the 400 MW solar plant in the Tashkent region was launched; the project is expected to produce 900 GWh/year of electricity, saving the use of 257 mcm/year of natural gas.

At the end of 2021, Uzbekistan had only 104 MW of installed solar capacity. However, the country targets 8 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2026 and 12 GW by 2030. The country is planning to build at least 5 GW of solar, 3 GW of wind, and 1.9 GW of hydropower capacities by 2030 to cover 25% of the power mix (up from 10% in 2019). Uzbekistan also plans to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
