The Saudi energy company ACWA Power will develop and build a 300 MW solar power plant in the Bagerhat district of south-western Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has allocated 900 acres (364 hectares) of land for the solar facility, which is expected to become operational by 2026. The solar project is expected to require an investment of US$430m.
The proposed power plant will become Bangladesh’s largest solar plant, as the country’s current largest solar power plant has a capacity of 200 MW. It was inaugurated in early August 2023 and is located in Sundarganj near the city of Rangpur (northern Bangladesh).
As of end-2021, solar represented slightly more than 1% of Bangladesh’s installed capacity with 329 MW. In January 2023, the government of Bangladesh set a target to cover 40% of its power generation with clean energy (including nuclear) by 2041 (against less than 2% at the end of 2021).
