The Saudi company ACWA Power has started full commercial operations on the 2 GW Al Shuaibah 2 solar PV power plant, located near Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia’s Makkah Province. ACWA Power has been granted a Commercial Operation Certificate by the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) for the first, second and third sections of the project, which totals an overall capacity of 2,060 MW.
ACWA is also operating the 600 MW Al Shuaibah 1 solar project, which came online in November 2024. Financial closing on Al Shuaibah 1 and 2 was achieved in 2023. ACWA Power owns a 35.01% stake in the projects. Its consortium partners are Badeel, which holds a 34.99% interest, and SPPC, which has a shareholding of 30% and is the power off-taker.
At the end of 2023, installed solar capacity (2.3 GW) represented 2.5% of Saudi Arabia’s total capacity and less than 1% of its power generation. The country plans to reach 50% renewable energy in the power mix by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2060.
