Acwa Power (Saudi Arabia) plans a 160 MW CCGT plant in Senegal

Acwa Power (Saudi Arabia) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Senegalese state-owned power utility Senelec to build a combined cycle gas-turbine (CCGT) plant in Cap des Biches with an initial capacity of 160 MW. The country intends to switch its coal- and oil-fired power plants to gas over the coming years as the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field is expected to enter production.

West African Energy and Senelec are currently building a 300 MW CCGT plant in Cap des Biches. The project, which is 85% owned by West African Energy and 15% by Senelec, should be operational by end-2022. At the end of 2020, Senegal’s installed capacity stood at 1.5 GW, with 63% of oil, 12% of coal, 10% of solar, 5% of gas, 5% of hydro and 3% of wind.
