ACWA Power may build 1.5 GW of new wind capacity in Uzbekistan

ACWA Power is considering building new wind plants with a total capacity of 1.5 GW in the Republic of Karakalpakstan (Uzbekistan). The Saudi energy group is already developing the 1,500 MW Sirdarya CCGT power project in Uzbekistan, which entered construction in January 2021. In addition, ACWA Power has signed two power purchase and investment agreements for two wind power plants with a total capacity of 1,000 MW, the Bash project located in Bukhara and the Dzhankeldy project in Bukhara/Navoi, worth US$1.3bn.

Uzbekistan aims to add 3 GW of wind capacity by 2030. It has a total electricity capacity of 14.9 GW, including 51% of gas-fired power plants, 18% of coal-fired units, 17% of oil-fired units, and 14% of hydropower plants (end of 2019).
