ACWA Power completes the 1.5 GW Syrdarya CCGT power plant in Uzbekistan

A 1.5 GW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant has reached completion in Uzbekistan’s Syrdarya region. The new Syrdarya CCGT power plant, developed by Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, required an investment of US$1.1bn and will cover the electricity needs of over 3 million Uzbek households as well as hundreds of industrial enterprises.

The launch ceremony also saw the start of projects for connecting the CCGT plant to the Syrdarya region power network, as well as the beginning of construction of a green hydrogen production facility in the Tashkent region, implemented jointly with ACWA Power. The first phase of this pilot project will see the production of 3 kt of hydrogen with subsequent processing into mineral fertilizers, and a 52 MW wind plant will be built to power the project.

In 2021, gas represented 56% of Uzbekistan’s installed capacity with 9.6 GW and 87% of its power generation (86% in 2022). Uzbekistan targets 8 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2026 and 12 GW by 2030. The country is planning to cover 25% of its power mix with renewables (up from 8% in 2021). Uzbekistan also plans to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
