ACWA Power begins construction of the 500 MW Bash wind project in Uzbekistan

The Saudi company ACWA Power has started the construction of the 500 MW Bash onshore wind project located in the Bukhara Region of central Uzbekistan. ACWA Power has installed the first 6.5 MW turbine of the project, which in total will comprise 79. The power plant, which will be able to generate 1.6 TWh/year of electricity, is set for completion in the first quarter of 2025.

ACWA Power is also developing another 500 MW wind power project in Uzbekistan, named Dzhankeldy and also located in Bukhara. In April 2023, ACWA Power signed loan agreements with the Asian Development Bank and the OPEC Fund, totalling nearly US$200m to finance the two projects.

At the end of 2021, Uzbekistan had only 1 MW of installed wind capacity and 104 MW of solar capacity. However, Uzbekistan targets 8 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2026 and 12 GW by 2030. The country is planning to build at least 5 GW of solar, 3 GW of wind, and 1.9 GW of hydropower capacities by 2030 to cover 25% of the power mix (up from 10% in 2019). Uzbekistan also plans to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
