ACWA Power and NREA sign deal to develop a 1.1 GW wind project in Egypt

The New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) of Egypt and a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power have signed an agreement to develop a 1.1 GW wind power project in the Gulf of Suez and Gabal El-Zeit regions of Egypt. The consortium includes ACWA Power and the Egyptian group Hassan Allam Utilities Company.

Once completed, the US$1.5bn project will be able to provide power to about 1 million Egyptian households. It is expected to contribute to save the use of about 840 kt/year of fuel and to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.4 MtCO2/year.

At the end of 2022, wind represented just above 2% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.4 GW and 3.5% of its power generation with 7.4 TWh. Egypt's updated NDC (2023) brings forward to 2030 the country's objective to reach 42% of renewable capacity. The 2035 Integrated Sustainable Energy strategy (2016) targeted 42% of renewable power generation by 2035, 25% of which from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
