The Saudi energy company ACWA Power has started commercial operations for the first phase of its 1.5 GW Sudair Solar PV power plant project, located in central Saudi Arabia, after the group received an Initial Commercial Operation Certificate from the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC). The obtained certificate relates to the first phase of the project, which represents 50% of the project’s capacity.
ACWA Power and the Water and Electricity Holding Company (Badeel) each own 35% of the SAR3.4bn (US$924m) project, while the remaining 30% is held by the Saudi Aramco Power Company (SAPCO). The power produced at the Sudair solar plant will be sold under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with SPPC, at a price of US$1.2c/kWh.
Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) targets 58.7 GW of renewable capacity in 2030, 40 GW of which from solar and 16 GW from wind (439 MW and 403 MW in 2021 respectively).
