ACEN Corporation will develop a 1 GW floating solar plant in the Philippines

The Philippine group ACEN Corporation has announced plans to develop a 1 GW floating solar power plant on Laguna Lake, located near Manila in northern Philippines. The announcement comes as ACEN, through its subsidiaries, has signed a Renewable Energy Contract Area Utilization (RECAU) agreement with the Philippines’ Laguna Lake Development Authority to lease 800 hectares of Renewable Energy Areas on the site.

In May 2023, the Philippine’s Department of Energy (DOE) selected SunAsia Energy, a Philippines-based solar developer, and Blueleaf Energy to build and operate six large-scale floating solar projects totalling 610 MW and which will also be installed on Laguna Lake. According to the DOE, a total of 237 solar energy contracts with an aggregate installed capacity of 1,282 MW and potential capacity of 21,452 MW have already been awarded by the department.

At the end of 2021, solar represented about 5% of the Philippines installed capacity with 1.3 GW. The country has another 1.8 GW of solar capacity in construction and 12.4 GW of solar projects under development.
