Acciona will develop a second 1 GW wind project in Queensland (Australia)

The Spanish renewable energy company Acciona Energy will build a 1,000 MW onshore wind park in the Australian state of Queensland, the Herries Range wind farm, worth AUD2bn (US$1.34bn), which will double the generation capacity of the 1,023 MW MacIntyre Wind Precinct currently under construction. The MacIntyre Wind Precinct will be the country’s largest wind project and will consist of two wind parks: MacIntyre (923 MW) developed by Acciona (70%) and Ark Energy (30%), and the 100 MW Karara wind park developed on the site by CleanCo, an Australian government-owned energy company. The project’s total 2 GW wind capacity will be able to power 1.4 million Australian households.

Queensland targets 70% of the state's power to be supplied by renewable energy by 2032 and 80% by 2035. In September 2022, Queensland unveiled a plan which includes a new SuperGrid connecting solar, wind, battery and hydrogen generators across the state. It includes plans for 22 GW of new wind and solar, 11.5 GW of rooftop solar, 9 GW of battery storage and two new pumped hydro projects capable of delivering 7 GW of long-duration storage.
