ACCIONA starts building 196 MW/980 MWh BESS at 246 MW solar park (Chile)

ACCIONA Energía has announced the construction of a 196 MW/980 MWh BESS at its existing 246 MWp El Romero solar PV plant in Chile’s Atacama Desert (ACCIONA Energía press release, 08/06/2026). The project is scheduled to start commercial operations by the end of 2027, and once operational it should be able to supply power to the grid for up to five consecutive hours.

The company has also started the construction of a 200 MW/1 GWh BESS on its 238 MWp Malgarida solar complex, and it aims that both projects contribute to optimise renewable energy management, improve grid stability, and strengthen the security of supply within the local electricity network.

ACCIONA Energía operates a portfolio of 922 MW, consisting of three wind plants (312 MW) and four solar PV parks (610 MW). The projects are aligned with Chile’s 2030 target of 80% renewables in the power mix (Enerdata’s Global Energy Research).
