The Spanish energy group Acciona Energia has plans to install a 200 MW/1,000 MWh BESS at its 238 MW Malgarida solar PV complex in Chile’s Atacama Desert (Acciona press release, 12/11/2025). The Malgarida BESS is expected to store, manage, and deploy energy for up to five hours once it starts operations in early 2027. The system is planned to store energy generated during the day and dispatch it at night to allow a cleaner and flexible grid operation.
The project forms part of the company’s strategy to optimise its renewable energy portfolio of 922 MW in Chile, which includes three wind projects, namely Punta Palmeras (45 MW), San Gabriel (183 MW), and Tolpán Sur (84 MW) and five solar PV facilities, namely El Romero (246 MWp), Usya (64 MWp), Almeyda (62 MWp), and Malgarida (238 MWp). The company is also developing three BESS projects totalling 1.5 GWh across its solar facilities.
