Acciona connects 246 MW solar PV plant to Chilean grid

Spanish renewable energy group Acciona has connected the 246 MW El Romero solar PV power project to the Central Interconnected System (SIC) in Chile. The solar project (196 MW rated power) is located in the municipality of Vallenar, in the Atacama desert, and required an investment of US$343m. El Romero will enter into commercial operations in the next few weeks. Once completed, it will produce around 500 GWh/year of electricity, enough to supply around 240,000 Chilean households, and will avoid the emission of around 475 ktCO2 from coal-fired power stations in the process.

Acciona has been present as a group in Chile since 1993. It already operates the 45 MW Punta Palmeras wind park in Coquimbo (Chile), which was commissioned in October 2014. In August 2016, the group was awarded 506 GWh in auction 2015/01 organized by the Chilean National Energy Commission. To cover this level of supply, it will build the 183 MW San Gabriel wind park in La Araucanía.
