Acciona announces first power from its 923 MW MacIntyre wind project (Australia)

The Spanish company Acciona Energía has announced the production and export to the grid of first power from its 923 MW MacIntyre wind project, located near Warwick in Australia’s Queensland State. The wind project currently has 27 wind turbines connected to the Australian grid, which will begin powering Queensland over the course of October 2024. Power exports to the grid will ramp up as the site’s 162 turbines are gradually installed and commissioned.

The MacIntyre wind park is expected to become fully operational in the third quarter of 2025, and will be able to power about 600,000 Australian households once completed. The project, which will become Australia’s largest onshore wind park, is co-owned by Acciona and Korea’s Ark Energy Corporation. It is part of the greater 2 GW MacIntyre Wind Precinct comprising the MacIntyre wind park and the proposed Herries Range wind park, which is in late-stage development. In September 2024, Acciona Energía also announced plans to build the 3 GW Bellwether wind project in Australia by 2030.

As of end-2023, Australia had over 11 GW of wind capacity, 100% of it onshore (11% of its installed capacity and power generation in 2023).
