ABB will supply the 4.5 GW Zhangbei HVDC power line in China

Swiss-Swedish multinational corporation ABB will supply the 4,500 MW Zhangbei high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission line in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area of China in order to enable the integration of remote wind, solar and hydro electricity in a transmission ring network that will ensure optimal power flow. The main driver behind its construction is the need to optimise the power grid prior to the organisation of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The project designed by the State Grid Corporation of China will enable to transmit 4.5 GW of power across 648 km and connect the cities of Beijing, Zhangbei, Kangbao and Fengning. The power ring will incorporate 4 interconnected HVDC stations and is slated for completion in 2019. The project represents a breakthrough for the Chinese power grid and will enable the better incorporation of renewable sourced power generation in the country.
