90% of the US gas consumption was produced domestically in 2018

According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), more than 90% of the gas consumed in the United States in 2018 was produced domestically, thanks to the strong growth in US gas production since 2005. Gas production and consumption reached record highs in 2018, spurred by weather factors (cold winter and hot summer raising heating and cooling demand), developing gas-fired power capacities and economic growth. In 2017 and 2018, annual dry gas production exceeded consumption for the first time since 1966 and the United States became a gas exporter in 2017. Gas exports reached new records in 2018, at nearly 4 tcf (113 bcm), while gas imports reached their lowest level since 2015 at 3 tcf (85 bcm).

In 2018, more than 2/3 of the gas consumption in the United States came from the power and industrial sectors; the power sector has been the largest consumer of gas in three of the last four years, surpassing industry for the first time in 2012. The power sector accounted for 35% of gas consumption in 2018, followed by industry with 34%.
