8 GW Renewable Energy Zone in Australia attracts 34 GW of bids

The 8 GW New England Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in New South Wales (Australia) has received 80 registrations of interest (ROI) for 34 GW of potential renewable energy projects. The government of NSW had opened the ROI process for this New England REZ in June 2021 and the call was open to interested infrastructure projects, including wind, solar and energy storage until 16 July 2021. The regional government has committed AUD79m (US$58m) to support the development of the New England REZ, which is expected to attract over AUD10.7bn (US$7.8bn) in investment. The first auctions are expected in 2022.

New South Wales plans to develop 4 other REZ in the South-West, Hunter-Central Coast, Illawarra and Central-West Orana regions, which are expected to spur AUD32bn (US$23bn) of private investment and to add 12 GW of renewable capacity and 2 GW of storage capacity. The ROI process for the 3 GW Central West REZ  was also oversubscribed, attracting 27 GW of potential projects.
