700 MW Celtic Interconnector (France-Ireland) selects cable supplier

The French cable manufacturer Nexans has been selected to supply 1,000 km of 320 kV HVDC cables and a 400 kV HVAC connection for the Celtic Interconnector project jointly developed by the Irish and French power transmission system operators (TSOs) EirGrid and RTE. The €1bn HVDC line will have a capacity of 700 MW, connecting the Knockraha substation near Cork (Ireland) to the La Martyre substation in Brittany (France) over 575 km, including 500 km subsea. In 2019, a funding agreement under the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Energy Programme awarded €530m in funding to the project. In May 2022, the project was granted approval by Ireland's national independent planning body An Bord Pleanála. Construction works will start in 2023 and the project should be commissioned in 2026.
