6.3 GW of hydropower projects are stalled in India

According to the Ministry of Power of India, as many as 20 hydropower projects under construction, representing a total capacity of 6,329 MW and a total investment of Rs 30,147 crore (US$4.5bn), are stalled or stressed in India. This represents more than 14% of the operational hydropower capacity (above 25 MW).

These projects include NHPC's 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project, Lanco Teesta Hydro Power's 500 MW Teesta VI project, GVK Ratle Hydro's 850 MW Ratle project and Polavaram Project Authority's 960 MW Polavaram project.

The government is considering various options to develop the projects, including providing cheaper credit to hydropower projects above 25 MW with a view to make tariff competitive. Alternatively, all hydropower projects, whatever their size, could be declared as renewable projects, to ensure coverage under Renewable Purchase Obligation and qualify for dispatch priority.
