The 4.6 GW Kuara solar project receives environmental approval (Brazil)

The State Council for the Environment (Coema) of the Brazilian state of Ceará has granted the environmental license for the implementation of the 4.6 GW Kuara solar project, which will be developed by the Brazilian company Omega Energia, and will be located between the municipalities of Aracati and Fortim, in the state of Ceará (north-eastern Brazil).

The project is set to become the world’s largest solar park and will comprise eight million solar panels spread across 8,000 hectares (80 km2). The power generated will be in part used for green hydrogen production by the Australian company Fortescue, which intends to build an industrial hydrogen plant in the port of Pecém, located about 200 km from the solar park. The schedule of completion and value of the investment have not yet been revealed.

At the end of 2021, solar accounted for 7% of Brazil’s installed capacity with 13 GW, behind wind (11%, 21 GW) and hydropower (58%, 109 GW). The country currently has more than 7 GW of solar projects under construction and more than 55 GW under development.
