440 MW hybrid renewable project enters environmental assessment in Chile

The Norwegian state-owned energy company Statkraft has submitted its 440 MW Vientos del Desierto hybrid solar and wind park, located in the municipality of Taltal, Antofagasta region (Northern Chile), to the Chilean Environmental Assessment Service (SEA). The US$650m project is expected to consist of 123 MW of solar PV and 317 MW of wind power (44 wind turbines rated 7.2 MW each), and will include batteries with a total energy storage capacity of 240 MW. The project is expected to enter commercial operation in 2029 and to have a useful life of 40 years.

Statkraft has been present in Chile for nine years and since 2020 it has been developing an ambitious 100% renewable growth plan. The company currently has over 800 MW of renewable energy capacity installed (185 MW Parina and 671 MW Pauna solar photovoltaic projects) and four initiatives under construction in Chile.
