33 bidders for Ghana's power distribution assets

At least 33 African, European and Asian power companies have expressed their interest in acquiring electricity distribution assets from the national power utility in Ghana, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Indian group Tata Power, British investors Actis and CDC Group, Eranove or French energy group ENGIE would be interested, as well as a consortium of EDF and Veolia (first alliance since they fail to share the concession of the Gabonese water and power group Société d’énergie et d’eau du Gabon SEEG in 2011).

Electricity Company of Ghana is facing financial and operational difficulties and issued a call for expression of interest in late 2015. The exact scope and amount of the assets to be sold remain to be defined. The pre-qualification phase should start in April 2016 and would be followed by a tender procedure, whose results are expected in the second half of 2016. However, winner announcement could be delayed by the presidential elections in November 2016.
