Ocean Winds (50% EDP Renewables, 50% Engie) and Irish renewable developers Mainstream and ESB have secured option agreements for three floating offshore wind projects totalling 2.8 GW in Shetland, Scotland, United Kingdom. The projects, which will cover an area of 560 km2, will be offered seabed agreements following the Crown Estate Scotland's (i.e. the public corporation of the Scottish government responsible for the management of land and property) latest ScotWind clearing process.
Ocean Winds' joint venture with Mainstream has secured the largest project with a 1.8 GW area for £36m (€43m). Ocean Winds has also been awarded a 500 MW project and will pay a £10m (€12m) option fee, the same as ESB’s 500MW site. The developers were selected from a total of 14 applications. The three projects’ initial supply chain commitments indicate an average of £1.2bn (€1.4bn) investment in Scotland per GW of capacity built, according to Crown Estate Scotland.
Earlier in August 2022, Crown Estate Scotland opened its new Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) offshore wind leasing process, in which developers are being invited to bid for seabed leases off the coast of Scotland.
