Following two years of growth, the electricity demand in Italy declined in 2012. Terna’s early provisional data on the electricity demand in 2012, registered a 2.8 % drop compared to 2011; demand had dropped by 5.7% in 2009. The total energy demand required in Italy in 2012 was equal to 325.3 TWh, similar to the same demand registered in 2004.
According to early estimates, in 2012 the electricity demand was met for 87% with the national production (of which 62.2% thermoelectric, 13.3% hydropower, 1.6% geothermal, 4.0% wind power and 5.6% photovoltaic production) and for the remaining part (13%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More in details, the net national production (284.8 TWh) dropped by 2.3% compared to 2011; wind power strongly increased (+34.2%) as did photovoltaic production (+71.8%), while hydroelectric (-8.2%), thermoelectric (-6.3%) and geothermal production (-1.4%) decreased.
