2.1 GW offshore wind project gains major project status in Australia

The Australian Government has awarded the Major Project Status to the 2.1 GW Gippsland Dawn offshore wind project. The AUD10bn (US$6.7bn) Gippsland Dawn offshore wind project is being developed by the Spanish offshore wind developer BlueFloat and is situated between 10 km and 33 km from the coast Victoria (south-eastern Australia). Construction is scheduled for 2029 and the project should start operations by 2031 for an expected lifespan of over 30 years. However, the project still needs to go through federal and state approval processes.

The distinction recognizes the importance of the project to the country’s development of an offshore renewable energy industry and energy transition by providing access to governmental support through the Major Project Facilitation Agency and support in the government approvals processes.

The Australian state of Victoria targets 65% of electricity generated from renewable sources by 2030 and 95% by 2035. It aims to start offshore wind generation as soon as 2028 and to reach 2 GW by 2032, 4 GW by 2035, 9 GW by 2040, and 13 GW in 2050.
