19% of US energy imports came from Canada in 2016

Canada was the largest energy trading partner of the United States in 2016. 19% of the American energy imports came from Canada and 5% of American energy exports went to Canada.

The American energy imports from Canada have exceeded the American energy exports to Canada but their values both fell in particular because of the decline in commodities prices such as natural gas, crude oil and petroleum products.

In 2016, 301 000 bbl/d of US crude oil has been exported to Canada and 219 000 bbl/d exported to other countries. 12% of US petroleum products (564 000 bbl/d) have been exported to Canada, valued at US$8.2bn.

Natural gas exports between both countries were largely dominated by pipeline shipments and natural gas imports from Canada averaged 97% of all US natural gas imports, valued at US$5.9 bn in 2016.

In 2016, 73 GWh of electricity have been imported from Canada, while the US exported 9.3 GWh. The transmission connections linking both countries are an important component of their electricity markets.
