Local authorities have authorised the construction permit for the 1,700 MW Mintia gas-fired power plant, located in Hunedoara, in the Transilvania region of Romania. The project, which holds a national importance status, is a former coal-fired power plant and is expected to be commissioned 36 months after construction starts. Once operational, the project is expected to produce about 12 TWh/year of energy during a projected lifespan of 30 years.
The Mintia gas-fired power plant project was developed by Mass Global Holding, which bought the insolvent Mintia coal-fired power plant in December 2022 for €91.2m. It has already signed a connection contract with Romania’s transmission system operator Transelectrica and a new gas pipeline should be built by Transgaz to connect to the BRUA gas pipeline. The €1.5bn investment aims to advance Romania’s commitments as a European Union member state, and to contribute by providing for the country’s baseload energy needs.
