1.5 GW Abalone offshore project off South Korea secures permit

Deep Wind Offshore Korea, the local subsidiary of the Norwegian developer Deep Wind Offshore (DWO), has secured a Public Waters Occupancy and Use Permit (PWOP) for its 1.5 GW Abalone Offshore Wind project off the south-western coasts of South Korea. The Abalone project is part of a partnership between DWO and BP to develop four offshore wind projects with a potential capacity of 6 GW across the Korean peninsula. The approval allows the project to move ahead with further offshore investigations and increases its commercial attractiveness.

DWO is an international developer and owner of offshore wind projects, with local presence in Norway, South Korea, Sweden and Estonia. The JV with BP also has also secured the PWOP approval for its Admiral Lee offshore wind, another of the four planned projects by the partnership.

At the end of 2023, South Korea had a total installed capacity of 147 GW, of which offshore wind represented 136 MW.
