148 MW phase commissioned at Thorton Bank offshore wind (Belgium)

RWE, through its 26.7%-owned subsidiary C-Power, has commissioned the second phase of the Thorton Bank II offshore wind park, located off the Belgian coast.

The second phase of the wind farm consisting of 24 new wind turbines with a total output of 148 MW is now fully in operation and connected to the grid. The turbines are set to generate approximately 500 GWh/year of electricity. This output meets the average annual energy needs of around 140,000 households in Belgium. The first phase, consisting of six 5 MW turbines, was commissioned in 2009. They are also connected to the grid and are already producing electricity. The installation of the remaining 18 turbines is scheduled to begin in March 2013 for completion during the summer. Once fully operational, Thornton Bank offshore wind farm will boast an installed output of approximately 325 MW, capable of supplying some 600,000 people with electricity a year.
