A 12 Mt/year LNG export project in Canada enters approval process

The Ksi Lisims LNG project, proposed by the Nisga’a Nation and a consortium of Canadian gas producers, Rockies LNG and Western LNG, has secured provincial approval to enter into the environmental assessment process in British Columbia (Canada). Planned for Pearse Island, west of Ginglox, the project is expected to produce 12 Mt/year of LNG. The decision on the CAD10bn (US$7.3bn) project was announced by the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office.

Canada, which is the world’s fifth largest natural gas producer with an output of 191 bcm (2021), exports around 40% of its production to the United States by pipeline. The country does not currently produce LNG. More than 15 LNG exports projects with a total capacity of 90 Mt/year are at different stage of development in the country. Located in Kitimat, British Columbia, the Shell-operated LNG Canada (28 Mt/year) project, which is under construction, should be commissioned in 2025.
