The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has successfully completed cold hydrostatic testing on its Unit 7 reactor of the Tianwan nuclear power plant, located in East China's Jiangsu province. The VVER-1200 reactor, rated 1,171 MW (gross capacity of 1,265 MW), is now set to transition towards its commissioning phase, expected in 2026.
The Tianwan nuclear project is set to become the largest nuclear power plant in the world, with a total of eight units with a total combined capacity of 9 GW that should generate more than 70 TWh/year of electricity, once it reaches full operations. Units 1 to 6, rated 1 GW each, were commissioned between 2006 and 2021, and unit 8 (similar to unit 7), is expected in 2027.
The project is operated by the Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation, a joint venture between CNNC (50%), China Power Investment Corporation (30%) and Jiangsu Guoxin Group (20%).
