The 1 GW HØST PtX Esbjerg project has signed a grid connection agreement with the Danish transmission system operator (TSO) Energinet. The Power-to-X project, currently under development, aims to produce green ammonia for agriculture and shipping and is expected to be commissioned in 2027. The project will require an estimated investment of €1.4bn and a Final Investment Decision (FID) should be taken in early 2023. The plant will be connected to the electric grid enabling it to receive electricity, and at the same time it will be able to function as a buffer or storage facility, which will allow it to return surplus electricity to the grid in times of electricity shortage.
The HØST PtX Esbjerg project will use renewable energy to produce about 600,000 t/year of green ammonia that can be used as feedstock for fertilizer production and as green fuel in the maritime industry. The plant will operate flexibly adapting to the available power production from renewables, which will be converted into hydrogen and stored as ammonia. The process heat from the production of hydrogen and ammonia will also be used for district heating of 15,000 households in the Esbjerg and Varde area in western Denmark.
