The European Commission continues its climate diplomacy efforts in preparation for the 30th Conference Of Parties (COP30) on climate, scheduled for Belém, Brazil, in 2025. Many countries will submit their contributions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), contributing to the second Global Stocktake. This key process aggregates all national efforts and strategies to identify the actions needed to combat climate change.
In line with these preparations, the Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) launched a call for international cooperation projects. The aim was to accelerate national and international climate action, with a particular focus on social justice. The winning consortium, led by the Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationals (IDDRI), includes Enerdata as a global modelling partner. This four-year project, named “JUSTPATH”, also involves a modelling team from ten countries1 with a significant influence on their respective countries’ climate strategy. The objective of this project is to analyse domestic ambitions against global commitments and improve their consistency, with a focus on socio-economic perspectives and just transitions.
Enerdata has been selected for its extensive global and country modelling experience. We will actively engage with the national teams in the JUSTPATH project, contributing to discussions on global scenarios. Based on the POLES-Enerdata energy system model, which ensure overall consistency, Enerdata will provide the international scenario background, setting boundary conditions for country-specific perspectives. The model will also be soft-coupled with Cambridge Econometrics’ E3ME model to enable further socio-economic analysis. Enerdata will interact with and provide insights and modelling results to each of the ten national teams, as well as to a Turkish expert think tank, SHURA. The results will be benchmarked with national perspectives and scenarios.
By collaborating to the JUSTPATH project, Enerdata will deliver insightful analysis for the European Commission and the national teams. This will also enhance understanding of contentious issues within climate diplomacy.
Note:
1 Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and the USA. Türkiye will also be studied with the local SHURA think-tank.
