Comprehensive study on biomass in France conducted for ADEME

In collaboration with our partners Ceresco and Meresco, Enerdata has delivered the first edition of "Key Biomass Figures in France" for ADEME (the French Agency for Ecological Transition). This study provides the most comprehensive overview of French biomass to date, covering all resource types and their diverse end-uses across the country.

We established an exhaustive inventory of both primary biomass, sourced directly from agricultural, forestry, and aquatic ecosystems, and secondary biomass, derived from processing activities such as livestock by-products and residues from the agri-food, wood, and paper industries. This pioneering work required innovative methodologies to harmonise highly heterogeneous data from a wide variety of sources. To provide a clear, integrated vision, we modelled all biomass flows into a Sankey diagram using a common unit of measurement.

Enerdata specifically focused on the energy-related challenges of biomass as a critical lever for the ecological transition. We collected, standardised, and analysed data regarding both biomass supply (agricultural, forestry, and waste) and demand (electricity and heat production, biofuels, and biomethane injection).

As the project lead, Enerdata delivered—on behalf of the consortium—a consolidated database and a comprehensive final report, (in french),  now available in the ADEME library.
