German energy consumption dipped by 4.7% in 2014

According to the German industry statistics group AGEB, primary energy consumption in Germany decreased by 4.7% in 2014, from 13.7 PJ to 13 PJ. Gas consumption declined by nearly 13%, reducing its share in primary consumption from 22% to 20.5%. Oil consumption contracted by 1.3% (but its share in the energy mix grew from 34% to 35%), while the consumption of coal and lignite dipped (-7.9% and -3.6%, respectively); their shares in the energy mix remained stable at 13% and 12%, respectively. Nuclear and renewable generation remained stable in 2014 (8% and 11% of the energy mix). The decrease in primary energy consumption is partly due to a milder weather and also to a lower consumption from the chemical industry.

Where supply is concerned, primary energy production declined by 3.2% from about 4,000 PJ to 3,880 PJ, due to a 2.5% drop in lignite production and to a 14% drop in gas production. Renewable production remained stable (+0.5%) in 2014.
