Overview

Türkiye is advancing its energy transition with ambitious targets, including a 42% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 and 120 GW of solar and wind capacity in the same period. The National Energy Plan 2022-2035 prioritises renewables, energy efficiency, and supply security, supported by regulatory bodies like MENR, EMRA, and MEUCC. Key developments include nuclear projects, expanded gas infrastructure, and a new emissions trading scheme, positioning Türkiye as a regional energy hub while balancing economic growth with sustainability.

  • Energy & Climate Policy Framework

    MENR (Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources; ETKB in Turkish) oversees the energy sector and natural resources, and more specifically of implementation of energy policies.

  • Energy Companies

    Oil:

    TPAO, Turkish Petroleum Company (Türkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortakligi), a public company, accounted for more than 76% of the country's production in 2024 (34 mbl). About 30 private companies, two of which are Turkish, share the remainder.

  • Energy Supply & Demand

    Gas:

    The production of natural gas has been soaring since 2022, from 0.4 bcm to 3.1 bcm in 2025 (+38%), a record high since 1990. Most of the production comes from the Black Sea's Sakarya field, where over 600 bcm worth of gas have been discovered by TPAO since 2020. First commercial production started in 2023.

  • Energy Use and Price by Sector

    Energy Prices in Residential:

    In 2025, the gas price for household (in Turkish lira) increased by 40% to TRY0.93/kWh, still rising since the 2022 surge (+32%/year on average). In 2022, residential prices more than doubled to TRY0.40/kWh. Household gas prices are less than a third of the EU average.

  • Issues & Prospects

    Gas:

    The country aims at becoming a gas hub linking European demand centres with Russia and the large producers of the Caspian Sea. It is also diversifying towards LNG to reduce its dependence on Russian gas.
