NTPC wins 5 coal blocks and plans 4 GW of coal plants in Vizag (India)

India's largest power generation company, state-owned NTPC, has been reallotted five coal blocks that were cancelled in 2014 by the Supreme Court. The company has been awarded the Chatti-Bariatu, Chatti-Bariatu (South) and Kerandari blocks in Jharkhand, the Dulanga block in Odisha and the Talaipalli block in Chhattisgarh, as the government has just allotted 38 mines, including 33 to private companies. The government planned to award 43 blocks but five blocks did not receive any application. The West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd has won eight blocks, namely Barjora, Barjora (North), Gangaramchak, Gangaramchak Bhadulia, Tara East, Tara West, Pachwara North and Kasta East. Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd has won six blocks (Baranj I, II, III & IV, Manora Deep and Kiloni), while Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (RRVUNL) and the Chattisgarh State Power Generation Company have each been allotted three blocks (Parsa East, Kanta Basan and Parsa on the one hand and Gare Palma Sector III, Gidhmuri and Patoria blocks on the other hand).

NTPC is seeking to secure its coal supply to support the development of new coal-fired power plants. The company plans to invest Rs 20,000 crore (US$3.2bn) in the development of four 1,000 MW imported coal-fired power plants in Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh. NTPC has already invited tenders for sourcing equipment for this Pudimadaka project.
