Madagascar targets 5 GW of new power capacity by 2030

Madagascar has launched an electrification program that targets the construction of 5 GW of new power capacity by 2030. The project supported by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), is estimated to require US$12bn in investments.

Solar and hydropower are the main sources of energy considered. The plants will be installed in the regions of Sava and Sofia, as well as in the southern part of the island.

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has already granted licence to five major hydroelectric sites and is currently in contracts negotiation process. The construction works of the facilities, that will have a total capacity of 680 MW, will be spread over 3-7 years. The hydropower plants will be built as part of a public-private partnership in which the Government of Madagascar will contribute to 60%.

The implementation of this program is part of the government's goal to increase the rate of national electrification from 15% today to 70% by 2030.
