Brazil unveils ten-year energy development plan to 2024

The Ministry of Mines and Energy of Brazil has put into public consultation the Ten-Year Energy Plan 2024 (Plano Decenal de Energia 2024, PDE 2024).

According to the plan, installed power generation capacity in Brazil should increase by 55% (nearly 73.6 GW), from nearly 133 GW in December 2014 to 206 GW in December 2024. So far, more than 41 GW of new power capacity has been contracted through auctions (leilões), including nearly 20 GW of hydropower, 1.2 GW of nuclear, more than 6 GW of thermal and 15 GW of renewables; an additional 33 GW is under planning (20 GW of renewables, 7.5 GW of hydropower and 5 GW of thermal).

Electricity consumption is expected to increase by an average 4.1%/year over the 2014-2024 period.

Final energy consumption should progress by 2.9%/year on average over the 2014-2024 period; over this period, oil product consumption (44% of final energy consumption in 2015) should increase by 2.2%/year, gas by 3.5%/year and coal by 2.5%/year. Biomass and biofuel consumption should continue to progress at a dynamic pace (+2.8%/year for bagasse, +4.8%/year for ethanol and +7%/year for biodiesel).
