Indonesia plans to add 42 GW of power capacity by 2024

Indonesia plans to increase its installed capacity from 54 GW in 2014 by 42 GW by 2024, when it should reach 96 GW. A total investment of IDR 1,188 trillion (US$90.1bn) will be required to develop this capacity. Nearly half of the capacity (20 GW) will consist of coal-fired power plants, while 13 GW will consist of gas-fired power plants; the remainder will come from hydropower, geothermal and other energy sources. Both state-owned power utility PT PLN and private companies will contribute to the capacity increase; PT PLN aims to build around 14 GW of new capacity for about IDR 608.5 trillion (US$46bn), with the construction of the first 4.9 GW starting in 2015. The approval process will be reduced from 900 days to around 200 days and the rules for electricity pricing by independent power producers will also be revised.

Indonesia expects coal production to reach 400 Mt in 2019, with 60% of which to be devoted to the domestic market.
