Germany Total Energy Production & Consumption
Per capita consumption decreased further to 2.9 toe in 2024 (-1.6%), many due to lower economic activity and warmer temperatures. Per capita electricity consumption also fell to 5 476 kWh.
In 2024, total energy consumption decreased slightly (-1.3%), reaching 242 Mtoe (-0.7% at normal climate), after a sharp reduction over 2021-23 (-7% at normal climate). Previously, it had decreased by 1.2%/year over 2016-2019 (normal climate).

Germany Oil Production & Consumption
Germany relies on imports for more than 97% of its crude oil supply with a declining production, which reached 2.8 Mt in 2024. Crude oil imports rebounded by 9% to 84 Mt in 2024, after a 13% decrease in 2023. Imports from Russia are virtually at zero (down from a 35% share in 2021) and are counterbalanced by supply from USA and Norway (around 18% each as of 2023), Libya and Kazakhstan.

Germany Natural Gas Production & Consumption
After a 2-year decrease following the shift to other energies due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, natural gas consumption rebounded by 4% in 2024 to 81 bcm due to the recovery in the industrial and power sectors. Previously, gas consumption soared by nearly 4%/year over 2014-2019.

Germany Coal and Lignite Production & Consumption
Coal and lignite consumption plummeted for the second year in a row to 121 Mt (-10% in 2024 and -22% in 2023), reaching record low levels (two times lower than in 2015). This reflects the end of the temporary restart of coal and lignite-fired power plants and their gradual phase-out. Previously, coal and lignite consumption decreased by 3.5%/year between 2015 and 2018 and by around 20% in 2019 and 2020, following the closure of 9 GW of coal and lignite fired power plants.

Germany Power Production & Consumption
Electricity consumption rebounded slightly to 464 TWh, after 2 years of rapid decrease (-5%/year) following a 3.5% rebound in 2021. Previously, it decreased by 0.8%/year between 2010 and 2019, with an acceleration since 2017 (-1.6%/year).

Electricity consumption is dominated by industry (42% in 2024), followed by the residential sector (28%) and services (23%).

Germany Renewable in % Electricity Production
The Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA), within BMWi, is the agency that funds the development of renewables.
The NECP targets an updated share of 41% of renewables in gross final consumption in 2030. In 2023, this share was 21.6% (52% for electricity, 17% for heating and cooling, and 12% in transport). The 2020 target of 18% was exceeded by 1.1 points.

Germany GHG emissions and CO2 emissions
In 2021, Germany updated its climate goals from the Federal Climate Change Act with a revised goal of at least a 65% cut in GHG emissions by 2030 compared with 1990 and at least an 88% cut by 2040. These cuts are also included in the final NECP.
